Thin arms, soft middle, fine in a shirt, shapeless out of one. Skinny-fat is the one starting point where both standard answers — bulk or cut — make you worse. This page settles it in three questions.
Skinny-fat. Keep reading — you're the reason this page exists.
Flat stomach, visible ribs, no gut? You're lean. Skip to Lean Bulk below.
Waist clearly leads everything else? Skip to Cut below.
Then you're sitting on the single biggest advantage in lifting: newbie gains. Your body can build muscle and drop fat at the same time. That's the recomp window.
Recomp still works, just slower. The tiebreaker is question 3.
Recomp. Same weight, different shape.
Wrong goal for a skinny-fat frame. The scale can stay still while your waist shrinks two inches and your shoulders grow. Chase the mirror and the lifts, not the number.
Eat at maintenance. Protein at 0.8–1g per pound. Lift 3–4× a week, heavy — working sets of 3–8 reps, slow lowering, close to failure. Walk daily. Judge progress on the 2-week trend of waist, lifts, and photos — never a single weigh-in. Weight stays put; the shape changes underneath it.
Maintenance +200–300 kcal. Not more. The surplus builds muscle; everything past it builds the gut you came here to avoid. Same training, same protein, add the calories around your sessions.
A moderate deficit of 300–500 kcal — never a crash. Protein stays high, lifting stays heavy; the deficit's only job is fat. Lose the weight slow enough that the muscle stays, or you end up a smaller version of the same shape.
"Just eat big, bro" puts 4 lbs of fat on a skinny-fat frame for every 1 lb of muscle. You don't look bigger. You look softer, and now you owe a cut you didn't need.
1,500 calories and daily cardio strips muscle off a frame that never had enough. Twelve brutal weeks later you're lighter, flatter, and still soft in the middle. The shape never changes — only the size of it.
That's the decision. The execution — your calories, your split, your weekly adjustments off real photos — is what coaching is. Start with the free audit and I'll tell you exactly which door you're in.
